On July 24th 2012, the newspaper The Hindu released an article titled "Raisins boost athletic performance: study". According with the Indian newspaper, the last issue of the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition had included new research findings that suggest that eating raisins may provide the same workout boost as sport chews.
The University of California-Davis led this study funded by the California Raisin Marketing Board, which assessed the outcomes of commercial carbohydrate supplements and natural supplements provided on staying power running performance. The results emphasized that raisins may be a good substitute to sport chews, as they also offer fiber and micronutrients, such as potassium and iron, and do not include additional sugars, non-natural flavors or colors.
