Alert Notifications are released when a food or feed presenting a serious risk is on the market and when immediate action is required.

Information Notifications concern a food or feed for which a risk has been identified, but for which the other member states do not have to take immediate action, because the product has not yet reached their market.

Border Rejections concern food and feed consignments that have been tested and rejected at the external borders of the EU and the European Economic Area when a health risk was found. The notifications are transmitted to all EEA border posts in order to reinforce controls and to ensure that the rejected product does not re-enter the Community through another border post.

SCIENTIFIC NEWS

Polyunsaturated Fat May Lower Heart Disease Risk

According to a new US study published in PLoS Medicine, March issue, shifting from saturated to polyunsaturated fat would significantly reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease.

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health investigated and quantified the effects of increased polyunsaturated fat consumption, as a replacement for saturated fat, from 346 identified abstracts, and 8 trials, totaling 13,614 participants with 1,042 coronary heart disease events. The results found that people who replaced saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat reduced their risk of coronary heart disease by 19 per cent.

The study shows that it is not replacing saturated fat with carbohydrates that brings the benefit; it takes polyunsaturated fats as replacement for the saturated fat to get the beneficial heart health effect.

Foods high in polyunsaturated fat include nuts and vegetable oils.
